The International Blockchain School will be held at IT University of Copenhagen on the 14th-18th of August, 2023. The International Blockchain School is an initiative of the European Blockchain Center and run jointly for the sixth year by faculty members from IT University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Business School, and Copenhagen University. Computer science education research has seen tremendous growth and professionalisation in recent years, leading to improved teaching methods and a better understanding of how to help students succeed in introductory programming courses. This seminar examines a major rework of Introductory Programming (B-SWU) and discusses the implications of those changes from both student and teacher perspectives. Sebastian details the changes implemented and an analysis of the outcome in terms of student feedback, observations, and grades. Based on these findings, I provide recommendations for other introductory programming courses and outline future areas in need of improvement.

Digital genskabelse af lydbilledet fra 1600-tallets Helsingør

Forskere fra IT-Universitetet har været med til at udvikle tre digitale installationer, som forbinder fortid og nutid i Helsingør by. Formålet er at undersøge nye og mere kropslige former for historiefortælling, fortæller lektor Jonas Fristch.

I Helsingørs gader kan man i sidste halvdel af maj måned finde tre lydinstallationer, som giver et bud på byens lydbillede for 400-500 år siden, altså på den tid, hvor Christian d. 4. regerede i Danmark. Installationerne handler dog ikke om hverken konger, slotte eller Shakespeares Hamlet, men om dagligdagen for datidens helt almindelige helsingoranere.

Installationerne er resultatet af projektet LYDSPOR, som er et samarbejde mellem Catch - Center for kunst, design og teknologi, Museerne Helsingør og Bylab og AIR Lab på IT-Universitetet. Sammen har fagfolkene fra de forskellige institutioner undersøgt, hvorvidt man kan bruge sonic augmentation/AR til at designe interaktive oplevelser, som giver en mere sanselig og anderledes historiefortælling.

- Lyd er jo noget, vi oplever helt umiddelbart. Det er noget, som er der i en situation, og hvis ikke der er nogen, der optager den, så forsvinder den bare. Når du hører lyd, er du derfor meget mere umiddelbart til stede, end hvis du ser en planche, et skilt eller et billede. Det at du bliver inddraget med lyd, vil ofte gøre, at du får en rigere og mere følelsesmæssig stærk oplevelse. Og det, synes vi, er interessant, for hvad giver det muligheder for at fortælle vores og vores byers historie, fortæller lektor, Jonas Fritsch, som sammen med adjunkt Vasiliki Tsaknaki, postdoc Stina Hasse Jørgensen, postdoc Karin Ryding, Lab Manager Halfdan Hauch Jensen og Lab TA Thomas Kaufmanas har leveret IT-Universitetets bidrag til projektet.

At opleve med kroppen

Jonas Fritsch forklarer, at projektet har to hovedformål og -udfordringer. Dels har installationerne skulle designes, konstrueres og placeres i Helsingør i samarbejde med historikere og andre fagfolk. Denne del har taget omtrent et år og har involveret en række designaktiviteter- og workshops i Helsingør. Dernæst er forskerne nu i gang med at undersøge, hvilken effekt installationerne har på brugerne. For at finde ud af det, har de brugt deep listening og body map-metoder, som bl.a. fokuserer på, hvordan vores kroppe oplever og sanser byens lyd.

- Vi vil gerne komme frem til at blive mere præcise i vores virkemidler. Altså, finde ud af, hvordan det her virker. Kan brugerne afkode de her forskellige lydbilleder? Hvad oplever de egentlig, når de hører dem? Hvad betyder det, at man designer med lyd til kroppe i bevægelse i et byrum? Det er jo det, vi går meget op i på AIR Lab her på IT-Universitetet; altså, at finde ud af, hvordan man kan bruge teknologi til at skabe følelser og i det her tilfælde til at skabe en følelsesmæssigt engageret fortælleform, slutter Jonas Fritsch.

Aiki - Turning Online Procrastination into Microlearning.mov

ABSTRACT
This paper presents and evaluates Aiki, a simple browser extension
designed to redirect a user to a learning platform for a fxed amount
of time before accessing websites defned as ’procrastination’ or
’time-wasting’ websites. The goal of the extension is to enable the
user to exchange time spent on pages they believe contribute less to
their own productivity for microlearning activities, defned as small
or short-term learning activities. The paper describes the design
and development of Aiki and evaluates the extension with a group
of n = 10 participants studying the Danish language. Based on
a two-week study, we conclude that this type of extension, even
in its preliminary version, has the potential to improve language
skills in a lightweight manner and that redirection is an important
alternative to blocking for procrastination management.

BLOCKCHAIN: NFT IN ART ON THE INTERNET

On March 11, 2021, the artist Mike Winkelmann, sold a collage of computer illustrations for 69 million $ - simply because that collage came attached to a digital certificate called an NFT.

Since then, artists and musicians worldwide have joined the NFT gold rush.

One of them is the Danish artist Jonas Kasper Jensen who is a fellow researcher at the European Blockchain Center at IT University of Copenhagen.

At the European Blockchain Center, Jonas is researching the impact NFTs have on the art world, by implementing NFT technology into his artistic practice and analyzing how the technology impacts the art community.

In this video, we visit Jonas at the Martin Asbæk Gallery in Copenhagen, where his paintings are exhibited. Jonas will tell us about what an NFT is and how he uses it in his art.

In the video, you will also meet Professor Roman Beck who is Head of the European Blockchain Center at IT University of Copenhagen.

Det gør systemerne både ufleksible, dyre i drift, og gør det svært at skabe den optimale handlingsplan for den enkelte borger.
Forskergruppen bag det omfattende projekt EcoKnow har igennem fire år undersøgt mulighederne for at gøre den offentlige sagsbehandling smidigere og mere effektiv. Nu præsenteres projektets resultater til en afsluttende konference på IT-Universitetet d. 12. august 2021.

Annotating Online Misogyny

Philine Zeinert, Nanna Inie, and Leon Derczynski have created a powerful tool to identify and combat misogyny online.

Abstract:
Online misogyny, a category of online abusive language, has serious and harmful social consequences. Automatic detection of misogynistic language online, while imperative, poses complicated challenges to both data gathering, data annotation, and bias mitigation, as this type of data is linguistically complex and diverse. This paper makes three contributions in this area: Firstly, we describe the detailed design of our iterative annotation process and codebook. Secondly, we present a comprehensive taxonomy of labels for annotating misogyny in natural written language, and finally, we introduce a high-quality dataset of annotated posts sampled from social media posts. Mange ser stadig computerspil som barnlige, men ifølge Miguel Sicart, som forsker i computerspil på ITU, bør vi tage dem lige så seriøst som film, TV-serier, litteratur og andre kulturformer. Computerspil fortæller historier på en ny måde og tvinger os til selv at tage aktiv del i fortællingerne. På den måde giver de os en helt ny måde, hvorpå vi kan forstå os selv, vores samfund og vores kultur.

A TEMPORAL FORM EXPERIMENT

Anna Vallgårda Head of the IxD lab and an assistant professor at the IT University of Copenhagen is experimenting and developing new methods and sketch tools for computational design.

Anna research is about developing Interaction Design as a material practice. How can we challenge our perception and understandings of the computer as a material for design - in new physical and temporal forms?

In this experiment Anna explore the expressional qualities of a series of simple temporal forms. She investigate the relationship between simplified compositions of states and transitions and how they can become expressions through light and different kinds of movements. The aim is to identify some of the qualities of temporal forms as means to grasp on this immaterial form component.

Assistant Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen, Anna Vallgårda, has decided to challenge the design and functions of the computer. How can computers be used in different contexts and ways? What type of materials can they be made of? What kind of shapes can they take?

In the atrium of the IT University of Copenhagen Anna Vallgårda built a 1:1 scale installation called THE DRESS ROOM. The installation is made of wood, fabric, metal and plastic. Placed on the floor of the installation are a number of sensors that react when you step on them. They either lower or elevate the installation.

IT-FORSKNING SKABER BEDRE LIV FOR ÆLDRE

Give&Take projektet på IT-Universitetet forsker i og udvikler it-løsninger for seniore. De ældre skal blive bedre til at bruge hinandens resourcer, og dermed styrke seniorenes sciale netværk og livskvalitetet.

I denne video følger vi Gågruppen på Frederiksberg, som er et aktivitetestilbud Frederiksberg Sundhedscenter tilbyder seniorene i kommunen.

Hver mandage kl. 10.00 mødes seniorene i receptionen på Frederiksberg Sundhedscenter for at gå tur. Efter gåturen er der kaffe og kage - og hyggeligt samværd.

Forskerne som leder Give&Take projektet følger de ældre og har udviklet en app til smartphone, iPad og computer, som de ældre kan kommunikere med hinanden.

Gågruppens ældre har taget godt imod appen. Seniorene skriver om alt fra deres hverdag, lige fra hvornår de holder fødselsdage, guldbryllup og hvilken rute de har gået.

I denne video ser man hvordan Gågruppens ældre bruger appen, og hvordan den giver de ældre større livskvalitet i hverdagen.

Algorithms and classical music is Associate Professor Thore Husfeldt's big passion.

Thore is the local chairman of the ICALP2014 conference at the IT University of Copenhagen.

ICALP awards the prestigious Gödel Prize. A prize for outstanding papers in theoretical computer science, named after Kurt Gödel.

In this regard Thore commissioned his friend and composer Niels Marthinsen to create a new pice of classical music for chamber orchestra interpreted by Gödels two incompleteness theorems. The theorems are important both in mathematical logic and in the philosophy of mathematics.

In this video Thore Husfeldt and Niels Marthinsen discuss the outcome of the musical work.

NEW ROBOT HELPS DEVELOPING ARTIFICIAL LIFE

Associate Professor Kasper Støy is developing a new robotic platform.

The robot is an open-source 3D printer extended with functionality for handling liquids and reaction vessels, and for obtaining feedback from the reaction vessels either using computer vision or task-specific sensors in real-time.

The goal is to help researchers improve their methods in creating artificial chemical life, living microorganisms, and complex chemical reaction networks. In the area of developing energy of wastewater.

The robot is part of the E.U. research project EVOBLISS - Technological Evolution of Synergy Between Physicochemical and Living Systems - funded by the FET proactive on Evolving Living Technology under the 7th frame program.

IT FOR JAPANESE SENIORS

While the technological innovation from Japan is widely recognised, 35 percent of the adult Japanese population can’t use computers.

Tokyo University of the Arts, the IT University of Copenhagen and NTT collaborate in order to find out how to meet the needs of different user groups in the development of novel technologies.

Through the collaboration, the Japanese researchers and the industry are introduced to the Scandinavian concept participatory design/co-design. The focus is on how to design technology that seniors can and will use.

In August, the very first Blockchain Business Brige Bootcamp took off with six Danish blockchain start-ups. After three days of intensive learning and mentoring sessions, they presented confidently in front of investors from both China and Europe.
